Born in Scotland, Simon Masterton holds a Master of Arts in French and Spanish from Cambridge University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Music Theatre from the Royal Academy of Music, and a Master of Fine Arts in Voice from NIDA. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education at the University of NSW. Simon is a certified teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork and Vocal Combat Technique.
For over 20 years, Simon worked internationally as a singer, actor, production coach and voice actor. Performance highlights include: Lachiusaʼs Wild Party and Lucky Nurse; touring as Bass 1 of the Swingle Singers; as featured soloist with ACO and Song Company; a French-language European tour of Le Petit Prince; and narrating Berioʼs Sinfonia at the London Proms.
His real passion, though, is teaching. Simon has lectured in voice, accents, acting, singing and text at Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Sydney Actors School, Actors Centre Australia, Toi Whakaari, and Cal State University Long Beach, as well as with NIDA on the BFA (Acting), MFA (Voice), and for NIDA Open and NIDA Corporate. His company, This is Not a Drill, offers voice and speech teacher training for high school teachers across Australia. In his role as a Knight-Thompson Speechwork trainer, he delivers workshops for speech and dialect coaches worldwide.
Simon has also been an Associate Editor of Voice and Speech Review, the journal of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.
