Sam Hernandez is an emerging artist focused on costume making and designing. His interest in costume and theatre was awakened in his high school years when he saw musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.
While at NIDA, he was able to thrive while immersed in the world of theatre, working backstage as a dresser, as well as in the costume studio as a maker. The skills he gained while at NIDA also allowed him to take on external projects such as dress maker for Ikuntji Artists’ debut runway collection for Australian Fashion Week in 2023, costume designer for the New Theatre’s production of Atlantis in 2024 as well as a dresser with Opera Australia on their productions of Carmen on Cockatoo Island and Magic Flute at the Sydney Opera House.
