Students develop their creative practice for the HSC Individual Project

As Year 12 students prepare their Individual HSC Projects, NIDA HSC IP Study Day offers an opportunity to learn from industry professionals in each area of study.

As Year 12 students prepare their Individual HSC Projects, NIDA HSC IP Study Day offers an opportunity to learn from industry professionals in each area of study.

NIDA tutors draw on their own creative process and explore how these skills can be applied to the individual project.

NIDA tutors have an understanding of the HSC learning outcomes, but also bring extensive experience, strategies and practical tools which they share with students throughout the day. The specialised tutors equip students with tools to assist with creation, problem solving, devising and structure, as well as the practical tools of their chosen discipline (for example, Vocal technique for performance students).

Students have the opportunity to trial these tools throughout the day, and leave with the knowledge and experience of how to apply them to their own IP. One of the tutors is actor and NIDA Graduate Pip Edwards, who talks about why she loves being one of the facilitators during the day.

Why is leaving their school environment important and coming to NIDA beneficial?

NIDA is a wonderfully creative environment. Spending the day at one of the world’s leading dramatic institutions is a great thrill for students, knowing they’re working in the same rehearsal room Cate Blanchett was in that many years ago!

Students arrive hungry to learn, create and make bold choices. Being able to devote the whole day to the IP is effective in preventing ‘outside world’ distractions interfering in the students’ process, which is often conducive tosignificant growth, creation and understanding.

Furthermore, students have to opportunity to meet drama students from schools across NSW, feeding off the collective passion and energy. Students are exposed to new ideas, perspectives and skill-sets, which can assist in helping students understanding their own.

What opportunities do you find the day provides for students?

The IP study day at NIDA offers students a ‘head start’ on their project. In my experience, they leave hungry and excited to get to work.

The IP study day is an opportunity for students to trial their initial ideas with an industry professional, who arms them with practical tools to help develop their creative voice. Students leave with greater autonomy, direction, structure, and ability to see ‘outside the box’, beyond what is predictable and safe.

It is a great opportunity for students to practice and develop the skill-set of their chosen discipline.

We encourage you to book early because the day is very popular and can book out. Register your interest for the next HSC IP Study Day here
