We know that each time we to our local cinema we’re helping support the film industry, but now your movie ticket can go one step further and help support students at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art. Tucked away in the dark of the cinema with a choc-top melting into our lap, it is the great work of creative professionals like NIDA’s alumni that bring a movie to life.
Now you and your choc-top can help launch the next generation of creative leaders. From 22 to 28 May, Dendy Cinemas will donate fifty cents from every ticket purchased at Newtown and Opera Quays to give a funding boost to NIDA students.
“It is difficult to imagine the world of international screen without the magnificent contributions of NIDA graduates such as Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), and Catherine Martin and Baz Luhrman (The Great Gatsby),” says NIDA Director and CEO, Lynne Williams.
“NIDA graduates have helped to create the movies that audiences around the world have fallen in love with. Now you and your movie ticket can help launch the next generation of creative leaders.”
This much-needed funding will go towards NIDA’s Student Bursary program which helps emerging performers, designers, technicians, writers and directors with the cost of living whilst studying full time at NIDA.
Lynne Williams says NIDA students can devote upwards of 60 hours of study time each week through daily classes, rehearsals, performances and industry placements a commitment that is often impossible to juggle with a regular job.
“The Student Bursaries help them pay for the basics in life and focus on their studies, meaning more talented students can have a chance to follow their dreams and go on to make great Australian films. We’re very lucky to be working with a supportive partner like Dendy Cinemas.”
So as if you needed a reason to go to the movies, now your ticket will be supporting the future of Australian stage and screen. The great films you can enjoy include The Babadook, the Australian thriller which scored praise at Sundance Film Festival directed by NIDA graduate Jennifer Kent and starring another former NIDA student Essie Davis.
Also on show will be Healing featuring NIDA graduate Hugo Weaving, Sunshine on Leith, My Sweet Pepperland, Belle, Broken Circle Breakdown, Spiderman 2, Transcendence, 52 Tuesdays, Godzilla and Bad Neighbours.
