From 18-22 June, NIDA Schools will be running for the first time a series of dynamic workshops that complement NIDA’s renowned June Season of Student Productions.

In addition, NIDA Schools will be offering two workshops to accompany The Department of Education’s production of Yerma with the NSW Public Schools Drama Company.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for students to be able to combine their theoretical learning in a school environment with seeing the live production and then engaging in experiential learning in a workshop context,’ commented Kate Sherman, Program Manager – Schools.

‘It is also extremely valuable for the students to be able to engage with teaching artists who are Industry Professionals and for them to gain an insight into the material from their perspective,’ she added.

The five workshops on offer are:

Realism, Approaches to Character
Developed to complement David Williamson’s The Removalists, this workshop will provide students with a variety of techniques to create truthful characters based on Stanislavski’s system of acting. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity for students progressing on to senior drama.

Theatre of the Absurd
Accompanying Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, this workshop will explore the genre as a dramatic form. Using Absurdist texts as source material, students create their own contexts whilst developing a greater understanding of the theatrical conventions of Theatre of the Absurd.

Multidisciplinary Theatre
A workshop complementing Ex Machina – which is directed by acclaimed puppetry director Finn Caldwell (Warhorse, UK) – students will explore physical and visual theatre from a number of source materials and devise their own pieces in response to the world today.

Ensemble Storytelling
This workshop will accompany the Department of Education’s production of Yerma, which is directed by Judith Hoddinott, and will explore collaborative process and how to tell stories visually and collectively. Students will find out how an ensemble can act as symbolic metaphor, can be representational, and can create a shift in perspective from the interior world of the character.

Elements of Production
Another workshop accompanying The Department of Education’s Production of Yerma, this will be a wonderful opportunity to gain a unique insight into the process of creating a production from page to stage. This workshop also includes a Q&A and practical activities with NIDA Technical Theatre and Stage Management and Properties and Objects BFA students.
