In 2018, NIDA Open Schools is offering an array of new initiatives and popular programs for both students and teachers.

Making Drama: Aboriginal Perspectives (NSW) will offer primary school students the chance to hear stories from Aboriginal artists, who will then guide them through a series of play-building exercises.

‘It’s a great opportunity for students to experience and creatively respond to the unique perspective of our first peoples, sharing in the tradition of oral story telling,’ commented Kate Sherman, Program Manager Schools.

The hugely successful Creative Ambassadors Initiative (CAI) will return in 2018. CAI is an investment in the creative practice and artistry of early career teachers. Successful applicants participate in a week of masterclasses at NIDA with specialists such as NIDA’s Director of Acting John Bashford, Director of Graduate Studies/Head of Cultural Leadership Associate Professor Cheryl Stock and NIDA Corporate Course Manager and Training Consultant Lyn Lee.

Another initiative, The Story Trader, continues to inspire students to work creatively and collaboratively. This program centres on Transmedia theatre in the form of an educational alternate reality game (eduARG).

‘It is designed to teach grades 56 students about storytelling, critical thinking and creativity. Students are immersed in a transmedia story world using props, created environments, live performance and technology,’ said Sherman.

In Victoria, NIDA Open Schools has introduced a wonderful new program for VCE students. Devising for VCE is a comprehensive practical course to assist students in devising original, non-naturalistic performances. Participants will learn techniques for creative devising processes, performance skills and dramaturgy. We’re also offering the VCE Monologue Masterclass.

These are just a few of the great programs NIDA Open Schools will have on offer in 2018. Be sure to check out our brochure or contact us for more info on the full offering.
