NIDA Open has officially launched a new scholarship program for young people in Perth, Adelaide and Newcastle as it endeavours to increase access and participation in the arts.

A total of 12 NIDA Open scholarships have been made available to students in grades 712; six for grade 710 students (grade 812 in Adelaide) and six for grade 1112. Students have until the 28 August this year to apply for this new opportunity.

Chosen recipients will train with NIDA Open experts at Perth’s Subiaco Arts Centre, the Newcastle Grammar School or Adelaide’s Christian Brothers College in late September/early October.

Through complimentary professional training, the scholarship program aims to make the arts accessible to students from all backgrounds to help realise hidden talent and support developing actors in the three Australian cities.

NIDA Open has always acted as a fertile ground for students to grow as artists before going on to enrol in NIDA’s graduate, undergraduate or vocational diploma courses, attend other Australian performing arts establishments or go directly into the performing arts industry.

NIDA Director/CEO, Kate Cherry, commented, ‘NIDA is investing in our creative capital and inspiring transformative journeys with our new scholarship program. We want to inspire young artists to reach their full potential. NIDA Open creates the future by offering courses that enable additional professional development and tap into unexplored creativity.’

Applications are open to students with a current interest in the performing arts, as well as those who want to explore new opportunities and get involved in the industry for the first time.

Applicants simply have to go to open.nida.edu.au/2017-scholarships, submit a personal statement about how they would benefit from this opportunity, and provide two short letters of support from community leaders, such as teachers, elders or local artists.

The six grade 1112 scholarship recipients will receive a five-day NIDA Acting 101 course followed by a two-day Auditions Masterclass. Three recipients of the grades 710 scholarship (810 in Adelaide) will receive five days of training in NIDA Drama School and the other three will receive two days at NIDA Screen Acting Bootcamp (Perth) or Acting Boot Camp (Adelaide and Newcastle). All applicants must be available to attend the courses on dates specified on the applications page.

With courses held across Australia, NIDA Open helps young artists discover if they truly want to wed themselves to the performing arts before making a more committed move away to undertake more advanced training.

‘NIDA Open is committed to providing strong foundations for the development of young performing artists across Australia, so that they can go on to study with us at a higher education level or find their place in the industry, or employ their skills elsewhere in their day-to-day lives,’ added Cherry.
