Enter the world of theatre and film at EXPONIDA, a rare insight of what goes on behind the scenes at Australia’s leading institution for dramatic arts training.
NIDA’s majestic Nancy Fairfax Foyer is packed with miniature stage sets, exquisite costumes, eye-catching props, creative films and videos. The exhibition highlights the different disciplines, skill-sets and collaboration that go into producing a piece of great theatre or film.
EXPONIDA is free and open to the public until 15 December (9am to 5pm Monday – Friday) and gives a unique look at the achievements of students from non-performance Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Vocational courses.
Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, theatre director and NIDA Board member Roger Hodgman said that ‘one of the benefits of being at NIDA is not only the fine teaching but the chance to work collaboratively for three years. That is something that is rare when you leave here. The Student Productions Season and EXPONIDA exhibition is very much the culmination of three years’ work and the beginning of these students’ new careers.’
NIDA Director, Centre for Design Practices, Dr Julie Lynch said that the EXPONIDA exhibition is ‘an indication of the collaborative and agile nature of NIDA courses, the diverse opportunities, and how this nimbleness can assist each student find their individual creative voice. Through course-work and productions, the Centre for Design Practices engaged over 150 leading industry practitioners, through guest teaching, mentorships, placements, industry sessions and feedback. This connection to industry is key to NIDA’s conservatoire model, and is driven by a brilliant team of permanent teaching staff.’
Thanking all teachers, students and staff, Dr Lynch introduced Oscar-winning designer Tim Chappel, who has been teaching and mentoring across the BFA and MFA design courses, to officially open EXPONIDA.
