Last week, our Director/CEO Kate Cherry launched EXPONIDA, offering a rare insight into what goes on behind the scenes at NIDA.
NIDA’s Nancy Fairfax Foyer is packed with miniature stage sets, exquisite costumes, eye-catching props, masterful audio-visual work and creative films and videos. The exhibition highlights the different disciplines, skill-sets and collaboration that go into producing a piece of great theatre or film.
EXPONIDA is open to the public from 24 October to 9 December (9am to 5pm daily) and gives a unique behind the scenes look at the achievements of 2017’s graduating students from a range of NIDA’s non-performance Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Vocational courses.
‘The work on display at this year’s EXPONIDA demonstrates the students’ proven ability to collaborate effectively as artists, which is an integral part of the creative process within the dramatic arts,’ commented NIDA’s Acting Director Undergraduate Studies and Head of Technical Theatre and Stage Management, Graham Henstock.
‘The costumes on display at EXPONIDA bring to life the diverse range of skills learnt in the BFA (Costume) course, from creating the extreme silhouette of 1950s ball dresses to the sleek silhouette of 1930s bias cut daywear, with millinery the skills of our graduates is evident,’ added Head of Costume, Annette Ribbons.
‘Men’s’ and lady’s tailoring is presented in the form of 1890s ‘active wear’, and elaborate fantastical 1660s Macbeth witches demonstrate textile manipulation. Students use research to inspire and create authentic ensembles, including shoes, boots, corsetry and underwear made for individual performers.’

EXPONIDA 2017 is an exhibition of the work created by:
Bachelor of Fine Arts: Costume, Design for Performance, Technical Theatre and Stage Management (TTSM), Properties and Objects, and Staging.
Master of Fine Arts: Directing, Voice, Design for Performance, and Writing for Performance.
Vocational Diploma: Live Production and Technical Services, and Specialist Make-up Services.
