A delighted audience packed NIDA’s Playhouse Theatre to hear Richard interviewed by Fairfax Media’s online entertainment editor and film critic, Giles Hardie.
In a wide-ranging discussion, Richard discussed his NIDA audition, where he produced what he believes was the ‘loudest’ Shakespeare monologue delivered by an auditioning student.
He also gave an insight into working with fellow NIDA alumnus, Baz Luhrmann(Acting, 1985), on Moulin Rouge. ‘Baz would ask for one more, huge, mad, completely over-the-top take, and promised to never use it,’ said Richard. ‘Of course that would be the one that ended up on screen.’
Richard also spoke of his politicised acting cohort at NIDA – ‘We almost staged a revolution’ – and how his NIDA training still informs his craft to this day.
Fans of his brilliant and flawed cult ABC TV character, Rake, were also teased with an off-the-record revelation of when the show ‘might’ be back on screen.
