NIDA graduate appointed as STC Interim Artistic Director

NIDA would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our graduate, Kip Williams, on his new appointment as Sydney Theatre Company’s Interim Artistic Director.

NIDA would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our graduate, Kip Williams, on his new appointment as Sydney Theatre Company’s Interim Artistic Director.

Williams, who graduated from NIDA with a Graduate Diploma of Art (Directing) in 2009 and a Master of Dramatic Art (Directing) in 2010, has had a stellar career trajectory, starting out as assistant director to Andrew Upton on The White Guard in 2011 and making his directorial debut on STC’s production of Under Milk Wood in 2012.

NIDA Director/CEO, Lynne Williams, said: “Kip Williams continues to be a great role model for NIDA students. During his time studying directing at NIDA, he earned the respect and admiration of all who had the opportunity to work with him. He has distinguished himself in the industry as a practitioner who is constantly challengingthe status quo and this opportunity to lead Sydney Theatre Company as Interim Artistic Director is well deserved. We know that Kip will play a significant leadership role inAustralia’s creative future.”

Kip Williams has been an STC Resident Director since January 2013, where his directing credits include:the Helpmann award winning Suddenly Last Summer,All My Sons,The Golden Age,Love and Information, Children of the Sun,Macbeth,Romeo and Juliet and Under Milk Wood. He will be directing STC’s upcoming production ofA Midsummer Night’s Dream.

He has also directed work for NIDA, Sydney Chamber Opera, Malthouse, Melbourne Theatre Company, Tamarama Rock Surfers, Sydney Writers’ Festival, 18th Biennale of Sydney, Princeton Theatre, New Jersey and National Theatre, Melbourne. He has also been Assistant Director on operas for Opera Australia and Victorian Opera.

NIDA Head of Directing, Dr Egil Kipste, added: “Since graduating, Kip has stayed in touch with NIDA as a director, teacher and mentor. We all really appreciate his continued support of his alma mater.”
