NIDA Board of Directors, Academic Board and Executive Staff welcome new appointments

The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new Chairman and Board member following the 23 May 2019 Annual General Meeting of the NIDA Company.

The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce a new Chairman and Board member following the 23 May 2019 Annual General Meeting of the NIDA Company.

Mr Noel Staunton has been appointed Chairman of NIDA following the retirement by rotation of Ms Jennifer Bott AO, who will continue in the role of Chief Executive Officer. Ms Bott was Chairman of the Board of NIDA from 20 May 2013, and Executive Chairman from 29 October 2018 to 23 May 2019.

The Board of Directors extends their great thanks to Ms Bott for her commitment and dedication to NIDA as Chairman, as well as providing strong leadership as Executive Chairman since November 2018. She will remain CEO for 2019 while the Board begins the process of recruiting a new CEO to lead NIDA from 2020.

Mr Staunton has been on the NIDA Board since 21 May 2015 and has extensive experience in the arts and is at present Executive Producer for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. He recently concluded a five-year period as Artistic Director of the Brisbane Festival. His previous positions include CEO at Sydney Dance Company; Creative Executive Producer for a range of projects including the New South Wales Government’s 75th Anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge; Executive Producer for The Ring Cycle in Adelaide; Executive Producer for Bazmark Live including La Boheme on Broadway and the Fox Backlot; Technical Director, Opera Australia; Technical Director of English National Opera, London. Mr Staunton was previously a member of the (then) NIDA Board of Studies, serving from 1999 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2010.

The Hon Richard Refshauge SC, distinguished lawyer and former ACT Supreme Court Judge, has been elected by the Board as Deputy Chair.

NIDA also welcomes a new Board member, Dr Sandra Phillips to the Board for a three-year term. Dr Phillips is an esteemed writer and academic from the Wakka Wakka community in southern Queensland. She is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Indigenous Higher Degree by Research at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), is a Visiting Fellow of the Musashino University’s Creating Happiness Incubation, Tokyo, and a Foundation Judge of National Indigenous Story Awards.

Board member and Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design and UNSW Chair of Arts and Culture, Professor Ross Harley has been appointed Chair of the NIDA Academic Board. The Board thanks Professor Prem Ramburuth for her support of NIDA as a Board member from 2012 to 2018 and as Chair Academic Board from May 2015 to May 2019.
