The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) welcomed its new Master of Fine Arts students in Cultural Leadership, Design, Directing, and Writing for Performance to the Kensington campus this week.

The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) welcomed its new first-year Master of Fine Arts students in Cultural Leadership, Design, Directing, and Writing for Performance to the Kensington campus this week.
Director/CEO Kate Cherry gave an inspiring speech as she addressed them for the first time, saying that NIDA expects ‘curiosity, resilience and stamina’ from its students.
‘Learn the system so you can subvert it,’ said Cherry. ‘Be Trojan horses, be change makers. Lead from the front like warriors, lead from the back like wolves. We desperately need leaders who know how to listen, energise and empower.’
From this week onwards, the students will become part of the nearly 60-year legacy of teachers, performers, designers, writers, producers and directors who have experienced NIDA. The students come from all over Australia with a wide range of experience in the performing and other arts.
The new cohorts were also welcomed to country by Norma Ingram, and welcomed to NIDA byChair of the NIDA Board Jenny Bott AO, Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor Cheryl Stock AM andExecutive Director Learning and Teaching Dr Melissa Laird.
They also participated in several sessions including ‘Where Does Culture Sit in a Future Scenario?’ with a panel of guests including (above from left)Angharad Wynne-Jones, Arts Centre Melbourne, Dr Brian Walker, resilient scientist and ecologist CSIRO, Robyn Archer AO, Chair of Cultural Leadership,Professor Robert Clark AO, Chair of Energy Strategy and Policy UNSW, Liza-Mare Syron, Mooghalin Performing Arts, Cheryl Stock AM and Jenni Bott AO.
